Abstract : The effect of the structure of commercial viscose cord fibers on the carbonization and graphitization process and tensile strength of produced graphite fibers is studied. Four types of viscose fibers are used to prepare prolytic graphite fibers. The process and the progress of pyrolysis are studied by thermogravimetry, x-ray diffraction analysis, EPR resonance spectroscopy, and by determining the tensile strength of fibers produced under different heating rates. The study indicates the significance of the 150- 300 C temperature range for the process of carbonization and confirms the validity of published theories. (Author, modified-PL)
