Abstract : The paper sums up the results of Soviet satellite investigations of charged particles and magnetic fields in space during the last 10 years. These are as follows: (1) discovery of radiation belts around the earth; (2) discovery of a zone of soft electrons beyond these belts; (3) discovery of a plasma sheath extending up to 3-5 earth radii out; (4) experimental confirmation of the existence of solar wind; (5) determination of the form of the earth's magnetosphere and detection of a neutral layer on the night side; (6) confirmation of the absence of a strong lunar magnetic field; (7) investigation of magnetic field and charged particles near Venus and Mars; (8) detection of protons with an energy of 1 MeV filling the solar corpuscular streams in interplanetary space; (9) determination of the intensity of primary cosmic rays; (10) detection of helicity of magnetic lines of force in interplanetary space; (11) detection of electrons in the composition of particles appearing during chromospheric flares on the Sun.
