Abstract : The antiferromagnetic exchange interaction in the europium chalcogenides is attributed to the Anderson type 180 degrees Eu-X-Eu superexchange mechanism, in which the valence p bands of the anion and the empty down-spin f bands of Eu(++) are primarily responsible. This mechanism has to be related to the spin-polarized energy bands. (Author)
