Abstract : Estimates of the energies of solid-solid interfaces in eutectic systems have recently been made, based on lamellar growth theories which require that the interphase spacing is proportional to the inverse square root of the growth rate. The relationship is shown to hold for the Sn-Pb, Sn-SnAg3 and Sn-Zn systems, but significant deviations from it are found in the Sn-Cd, Pb-Ag and Bi-Ag systems. Values of the solid-solid interface energy, for the former three eutectics are calculated from three extensions of the original Zener analysis. The validity of such measurements is discussed critically in the light of the present results and current ideas on lamellar growth. (Author)
