Abstract : An approximate nonlinear theory is derived to describe the mechanical behavior of a laminated composite consisting of alternating layers of two homogeneous materials subjected to large deformations. The theory is based on two-term expansions of the motion across the thicknesses of the undeformed layers. The kinematics and the balance laws are formulated, and the constitutive equations are worked out for elastic behavior of the constitutive materials. The governing equations are subsequently written out in detail for the case of a small amplitude disturbance superimposed on a large static deformation. The latter system of equations is used to investigate the propagation of small amplitude time-harmonic waves in a prestressed laminated composite. (Author)
