Abstract : The Swiss Federal Aircraft Establishment and The Fatigue Institute of Columbia University are cooperating in a long-range research program on the fatigue performance of high strength steels in aircraft structures. The alloyed steels involved in the program fall into three groups according to carbon content, i.e. steels with medium (0.3-0.4%), relative low (0.1-0.2%) and very low (max. 0.03%) carbon content, the last group consisting of maraging steels. The greatest expectation and interest was focused on the 18 Ni 300 grade maraging steel because of its toughness and weldability coupled with the highest yield strength. (Author)
