Abstract : The report covers the first phase of a program, the overall objective of which is the development of a self-contained thermoelectric power supply suitable for use in a molecular electronics environment as applied to Advanced Aerospace Weapons Systems. A new thermocouple of a rectilinear type with complete encapsulation provided by a pencil shaped ceramic cylinder was developed. Power outputs in excess of 0.1 watt per couple were recorded. So far it has not been possible to detect any thermoelectric materials degradation or to determine any contact resistances, resulting from the fabrication process. Thermoelectric materials efficiencies in excess of 8% were calculated. Thulium-170, with a half-life of 127 days, was selected as the radioisotope heat source to be used for this feasibility study. The compatibility of its metallic stable isotope Thulium 169 with lead telluride was studied extensively during this program. (Author)
