Abstract : The thermal dissociations of ClF3 and ClF5 behind incident shock waves have been studied in the temperature range of 800 to 1300K. The courses of these dissociations were followed by monitoring the optical densities of the reacting mixes at 2200A. Plausible mechanisms are postulated for the overall decompositions and these are compared to the experimental results by means of a non-equilibrium computer program which treats the two sets of data as representative of isentropically reacting systems. The unimolecular decomposition rate constants are interpreted in terms of the latest statistical theory of reaction rates and the results are discussed. (Author)
