Abstract : In the northern taiga of Western Siberia, swamp vegetation can be used to determine the location of frozen and non-frozen areas. The type of vegetation is determined by: (1) the presence or absence of water on the surface of swamps; (2) the presence or absence a permanently-frozen layer of soil. Surface water in the swamps is a critical factor in thaw, freeze, and temperature of the soil. A number of factors cause variations in the depth and time of thawing and freezing, keeping the swamps in a state of change. The surface levels of the swamps change, causing variation in the amount of surface water, the depth of thaw and freeze, and finally, the vegetation. (Author)
