Abstract : Estimates of a hospital demand for residents schedule are presented. Published data from ninety-nine hospital departments of opthalmology are used to obtain these estimates. A second purpose of this paper is to cast the demand for residents model in a larger framework which might be developed when more data become available. The subject is important for a variety of reasons. First, very little is known about the educational function of the hospital which is essentially a non-educational organization. Second, the non-profit institution remains an unexplored entity. The most effective way to study it is to explore various aspects of these institutions in depth. Third, hospital demand for residents is related to the number of physicians who locate in a given community as location of residency is believed to be a factor in determining location of practice.
