Abstract : The theory of the space charge waves on a thin electron beam in crossed electric and magnetic fields is discussed. This point of view is then extended to derive the starting condition of an M-type backward wave oscillator which has a thin beam. The power gain and noise figure of several forms of the Maser amplifier were determined for a wide variety of conditions and the results presented in simple graphical form. Development of the low noise traveling wave preamplifier for radio astronomy observations was continued but difficulties in tube construction have delayed performance tests on the first tube. A theory of the instability of magnetically focussed hollow electron beams was developed as a by-product of our crossed-field study. It is believed that most of the significant effects are explainable in terms of this analysis. (Author)
