Abstract : Work to date on the plasma amplifier and measurement of electron density by microwave methods is summarized. The equations which govern the large signal behavior of beam-type crossed field tubes was formulated. These equations are being programmed for numerical solution on the IBM 704 digital computer. A new mode of wave propagation on finite diameter magnetically focused electron beams was found in the course of studying noise propagation near the potential minimum of a diode. A few of the important properties were explored theoretically. Propagation is not dependent on the electron drift velocity and a preliminary experimental verification was obtained using a plasma-filled waveguide. (Author)
