Abstract : Using a pulsed magnetic field and an optical scanning technique, the Zeeman effect of absorption lines of Eu(3+) in Eu2(WO4)3 was studied for fields up to 300k Oe. Comparison of the splittings of the quadruplet D(1) and quadruplet D(2) levels shows that the Zeeman effect of quadruplet D(2) can be described on the basis of the symmetry of the nearest oxygen ligands; the Zeeman effect of quadruplet D(1) shows a dominant symmetry axis in the direction of the chain structure of neighbouring Eu(3+) ions. The latter is attributed to covalence in the oxygen bonding. Evidence of covalent effects is found in the temperature dependence of the energy levels, and in the failure of the electrostatic field model to account for the quadruplet D level splittings. The quadruplet L(6) level of Eu(3+) was identified by means of its Zeeman effect. (Author)
