Abstract : The mean and the variance of the Doppler velocity of distributions of hail sizes are computed for wavelengths of 3.2, 5.4 and 10.7 cm diameter. Hail which has melted by the time it reaches the ground may have a diameter as large as 1 cm at the OC level (near 4 km), and the mean Doppler fall speed at the level is about 15 m/sec with a variance of 2 to 4 sq m/sq/sec. With larger hail the mean fall speed and the variance may be appreciably higher. The effects of hail melting, growth, and sorting by wind shear are evaluated in order to aid in the interpretation as to the existence of strong vertical motions, hail, and turbulence in storms observed by vertically directed Doppler radar.
