Abstract : Experimental work has been carried out to determine the recrystallization kinetics of magnesium-cadmium and magnesium-zirconium dilute alloys. A theory has been developed to explain the linear variation of per cent recrystallization with log time as observed in these alloys. Measurements of normal grain growth was made in magnesium-zinc and magnesium-manganese alloys and was found to obey the normal grain growth law, D squared = kt. The mechanism for grain growth was found to be a single step process with an activation energy of 18 kilocalories per mole. Preliminary work was accomplished in preparing specimens and building apparatus for low temperature testing of pure chromium tensile specimens. (Author)
