Abstract : The author compares the principal methods of wind measurement based on the determination of coordinates. The paper includes the following: the computational formulas for the direction of the wind and the displacement of the horizontal projection of the balloon between particular points, the equation for the three systems and the equation for the squares of the total errors of determination of angle and displacement; the general laws of radiowind observations; the influence of the horizontal angle; the comparison of the sounding systems; determination of the principal components of the general errors of wind measurements; special cases of wind measurement; the influence of systematic errors of the measurement of coordinates on the accuracy of determination of wind speed and direction; evaluation of the recommendations of the WMO on radar wind measurement; and effect of the earth's curvature and refraction.
