Abstract : This is an interim report with the primary purpose of reporting the almost incredible number of the various types and kinds of carboranes that can exist, in this case formed by the high temperature co-pyrolysis of nido-carborane-diborane mixtures and by explosions of diborane-acetylene mixtures. In both cases because of very short residence times, several thermodynamically unfavored isomers survived, while the high temperatures led to many species apparently coupled through boron-boron bonds. Standard analytical gas chromatography in conjunction with intermediate resolution mass spectroscopy was not capable of completely separating and identifying most of these species, but despite this handicap several new isomers of C2B5H7, C2B7H9 and C2B8H10 were identified with certainty. Interestingly, more of the C2B8H10 and C2B10H12 isomers than the intermediate closo-carboranes were formed. One might compare this result to the favored production of their isoelectronic isomers, B10H10(2-) and B12H12(2-), in the synthesis of the BnHn(2-) series. (Author)
