Abstract : For the case of a structurally-viscous liquid, defined as a liquid in which the physical parameters do not depend on the time, the onset of a transient mode corresponds to a critical value of the resistance coefficient. Whereas it was proposed that the same criterion can apply to a Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquid, it is shown that no single criterion can be the same for the two types of liquids. A criterion based on the resistance coefficient is shown to be related to the Reynolds number in the case of a structurally-viscous liquid, and calculations of this criterion are presented for the case of a round tube, a flat slit, and an annular gap. It is shown that when the resistance coefficient is plotted against the Reynolds number, the onset of turbulence is characterized by a kink on the plot. The results of the calculations are found to be in agreement with published experimental data. (Author)
