Abstract : The term convergency approximation is applied to a group of techniques for the approximate analysis of rigid-plastic structures subjected to dynamic loading. These techniques are based on the sufficient conditions for uniqueness for such structures, and make use of the converging nature (in an appropriately defined sense) of two solutions with different initial conditions but the same boundary conditions. The important feature of the technique is that it provides a means whereby, again in an appropriately defined manner, an estimate of the error involved in the approximate solution can be estimated. The present report is a unified description of the applications of the technique. Earlier work on impulsively loaded structures is reviewed, for both rigid-plastic and rigid-visco-plastic structures, and illustrated by examples. New work on applications of the method for pulse loaded structures is included. (Author)
