Abstract : Eight mixed esters of orthosilicic acid of the aroxyarylthiosilane type were synthesized because of the broad application of other silicon esters and the relatively limited information available for this type of structure, including silicon-oxygen and silicon-sulfur bonds. Diphenoxydi(p-tolylthio)silane (II) was prepared by reaction of p-thiocresol with metallic Na in dry benzene at 75-80 C and addition of diphenoxydichlorosilane to the formed p-methylthiophenolate. Additional heating at 80-85 C gave II, which was separated by filtration, evaporation of solvent and vacuum distillation. The other aroxyarylthiosilanes were similarly formed, i.e. diphenoxydi(o-tolylthio)silane, triphenoxy-(o-tolylthio)silane, triphenoxy-(p-tolylthio)silane, di-(o-cresoxy)-di-(o-tolylthio)silane, di-(o-cresoxy)-di-(p-tolylthio)silane, tri-(o-cresoxy)-(p-tolylthiosilane), and tri-(o-cresoxy)-(o-tolylthio)silane. The molecular refraction of the compounds and elemental composition were determined. These compounds represent colorless liquids and are soluble in various organic solvents. They decompose slowly in the presence of humidity and have good thermal stability. (Author)
