Abstract : The effects of continental runoff, wind regime and currents on fluctuations in the iceness of the Arctic Sea are analysed and compared so as to disclose the individual and the combined influences exercized by the factors on geographical distribution of drift ice on its concentration, on drift directions and velocity, and on other phenomena. Attention is focused on the movements of surface waters in the Arctic, which are initiated by the large Siberian rivers (Ob', Yenisey, Lena) and which influence substantially the character and degree of iciness in various Arctic seas such as the Kara, Laptev, East Siberian and Chukchi seas which in turn affect the surface water movements and ice conditions in the North Atlantic.
