Abstract : It is the purpose of this paper to present an evaluation of a method of QRS discrimination by defining the accuracy in terms of variation of time error. Indication of reliability of detection may be determined by observing the number of false detections and missed beats. Time error in noisy electrocardiograms is determined by adding noise electronically to an essentially noise-free electrocardiogram which serves as reference for timing of events. The results indicate that electrical activity of the heart may be detected visually under noise-free conditions with an accuracy approximating plus or minus 1 millisecond. With the addition of excessive noise, time variance in the order of 15 milliseconds is observed. False recognitions and missed beats also occur. (Author)
