Abstract : As the combination circuits used in digital computers can be regarded as single-cycle automata, a method of setting up tests for determining failures in such automata is suggested. The problem consists of these two parts: (a) description of the automaton by a formula suitable for setting up the test and (b) constructing the test according to the formula. It is assumed that some intermediate inputs and outputs in the automaton take on permanent 'one' or 'zero' values as a result of internal failures in logic cells. Most modern automata consist of standard cells performing the operations of conjunction, disjunction, and negation.
