Abstract : The impurity NO2 has been introduced into certain alkali-halide crystals. Two configurations of the NO2 molecule have been detected. In the first configuration (detectable at 77K) the impurity appears to occupy a positive ion vacancy and (except for a possible libratory motion) is frozen into (110) planes of the lattice. In the second modification the NO2 molecule probably occupies a negative ion vacancy and is rotating (even at 2K) about its y axis (the O---O direction). This axis is parallel to crystallographic <111> directions. An analysis of the 14N and 17O hyperfine data is offered. (Author)
