Abstract : The Cl + HBr pulsed chemical laser has been operated in the Q-switched configuration. The primary purpose of the experiment is to determine the importance of collisional deactivation in the system. A comparison is made between the experimental results and predictions of a theoretical model. The model is based on the rates of the molecular processes involved and calculates pulse energy as a function of time. Good quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is obtained. It is concluded that collisional deactivation processes in this laser are strongly competitive with the rate of reaction. (Author)
