Abstract : Stresses in a heavy solid sphere and in a heavy hollow sphere have been obtained photoelastically using the immersion analogy. With the use of the superposition principle, the solutions for the solid sphere and the hollow sphere subjected to diametral compression were derived from the gravitational solutions. The approach may be extended to any of the class of problems in which the surface tractions are normal to the surface. (Author)
