Abstract : This is a computational study of the relationships between infrared reflection band properties and oscillator parameters as given by classical dispersion theory. It is limited to the case of frequency-independent damping, normal incidence, isolated resonances. A total of 81 parameter combinations are computed, of which the reflection bands of 42 are illustrated and the essential band properties of all are tabulated. The effects of the various parameters on band properties are discussed in detail and from this a prediction capability is developed. A method is devised for the converse operation of recovering oscillator parameters from band properties by graphical functions. Three examples are worked to demonstrate the method from which approximate values of the parameters accurate from 5 to 20% are obtained. These results provide the basis for an efficient approach to infrared dispersion analysis by computational curve fitting. (Author)
