Abstract : A summary is given of balloon recordings performed from stations in Northern Norway, from 1965 to 1968, of auroral bremsstrahlung X-ray events produced by electron precipitation into the upper atmosphere in the auroral zone. The morphology and dynamics of such events have been studied by means of multiple balloon flights. The character of the X-ray events has been found to depend very much on the local time at which they are recorded. It appears as if acceleration and precipitation of electrons start in the midnight sector, and spread very rapidly eastward along the auroral oval. Temporarily trapped electrons then seem to drift out of the oval, and give rise to further precipitation events along the statistical auroral zone. (Author)
