Abstract : The use of molybdenum disulfide as a wire drawing lubricant was experimentally investigated. The molybdenum disulfide used in the study was a synthetic grade, having a particle size of 60 microns. One batch of this material was ground ultrasonically to a particle size of 10-15 microns, and another was ground in a super-vibromill to a particle size of 3-8 microns. Six types of cables were made from wire, and testing was done to determine the friction force between the cable elements. The friction force for two types of cables made from wires drawn with molybdenum disulfide lubricant was compared to that for ordinary cables. Testing was done on a machine which simulated service conditions.
