Abstract : The use of photographic plates for recording computer outputs and for data input is discussed. This method is advantageous because of the high storage density (10,000 to 1,000,000 information channels per square centimeter) it yields. The limiting factor in storage density is the spot size of the recording and scanning cathode ray tube and ultimately, the graininess of the photographic emulsion. The recording in binary form can be made either by individual points as their coordinates become available from the computer, or in blocks. The recording speed is determined by both the computer and the emulsion. Flying spot scanners are used to transfer the data from a photographic plate to the computer.
