Abstract : The invention involves a method for increasing the mechanical strength of glass by treating the clean surface with an etching solution. The procedure is designed for optical glass and involves cleaning the surface with a mixture of petroleum ether and hydrolytic ethyl alcohol, followed by etching at room temperature in a solution of ammonium hydroxide, preferably 6.7-13.4 N, for 50-180 minutes.
