Abstract : A Nuclear Applications program was initiated in the Nuclear Physics Division in January of 1968 in order to foster the utilization of nuclear techniques for solving existing research problems in nonnuclear areas at NRL. In general the experiments performed under this program fall into two classes: (a) the analysis of materials using neutron or charged particle radioactivation or prompt radiation detection; and, (b) ion implantation of energetic heavy ions into solids. Research in materials analysis included investigation of both radioactivation and prompt radiation techniques. Radioactivation was performed with neutrons, and with high energy charged particles; prompt radiation detection included measurements on elastically scattered charged particles as well as on gamma rays. Ion implantation experiments were performed. Ions used at the Van de Graaff accelerator were He3, Ar40, Kr84 and Xe129. Ions used at the 30 kV system were B11 and Ar40, and ions used at the NBS isotope separator were Al27 and Cr52. (Author)
