Abstract : The report is divided into three parts. The first part describes current laboratory studies of particle impacts on surfaces. Experiments are being made using a molecular beam source capable of generating ion and neutral beams at energies up to 5 keV. A quartz crystal microbalance and energy transfer probe were used to measure interactions of the beam with surfaces. Results of the thermal analysis of the energy transfer probe and measurements made on the transfer of energy and sputtering of Al and Au in Ne(+) and Ar(+) are presented. The second part is a paper entitled 'Sputtering at Satellite Altitudes.' The paper shows how it is possible to determine the displacement energies of surface atoms from sputtering yield measurements. The third part of the report is a paper entitled 'Gas-Surface Energy Transfer Experiment for OGO-F.' The work describes the application of laboratory instrumentation to the direct measurements of gas-surface interactions in space. (Author)
