Abstract : The origin of the increased concentrations of manganese in the oceanic sediments is a question that has been attracting the attention of research workers since the times of the first Challenger expedition. The samples from the floor sediments of the northeastern Pacific Ocean are mainly red clay, with an 0.5-0.7 per cent content of manganese oxide. (Author)
