Abstract : Interstitial impurities adversely affect the mechanical properties and processability of Mo and W. In this connection, high-temperature vacuum degassing of these metals is of major interest; precise knowledge of the composition and quantity of the gaseous impurities liberated from the specimens at high temperatures is a prerequisite for the proper selection of the degassing regime. All previous studies in this field have, however, been based on apparatus with vacuum systems producing a vacuum not deeper than 10 (to the minus 5th power) torr and contaminating the specimens with the carbon present in the oil vapors of the vapor-oil diffusion pumps employed. The current study, by contrast, is based on the use of the most up-to-date vacuum equipment, oil-less means of evacuation, and the electron-beam method of heating the specimens. (Author)
