Abstract : General remarks are given on the subject of total absorption, then indicate why such observations were pursued into the GeV range, and finally the observations themselves are discussed and what have been learned from them. For both electrons and pions the principal concern was to determine the spatial distribution of the energy deposited within an absorber, on the one hand by the electromagnetic cascade and on the other by the nucleon-meson cascade: or alternatively to determine the size and shape of the absorber needed to contain a specific fraction of the incident energy. This goal can be contrasted with the interest in this problem of the designer of a radiation shield who might be more concerned with the numbers of secondary particles emerging at large depths from the absorber.
