Abstract : Several of the methods that might be used in constructing a gamma-ray spectrum as measured by a finite number of detectors are compared in this work. Particular emphasis is placed on determining how well an incident spectrum can be represented by measurements taken with five Compton-diode detectors arranged in tandem. Several numerical examples are given illustrating that many methods devised to approximate the incident spectrum can yield erroneous results. These numerical calculations indicate the advantages of a method presented earlier over other methods in determining an unknown gamma-ray spectrum. These examples substantiate this earlier work in showing that probably the best representation of the unknown spectrum can be obtained by expanding the spectrum in terms of the response functions of the system. Any component of the incident spectrum that is orthogonal to all the response functions will not contribute to the output; hence such a component of the spectrum would not be detected by the measuring device. In this sense, the solution contains all the information about the unknown spectrum that the measurements are capable of giving. An analytic form for the response functions of the Compton diodes which were previously determined by Monte Carlo calculations at discrete energy points is also given. (Author)
