Abstract : This report describes the results of a program for the development of a Charge-Controlled Image Storage Panel. This is an electroluminescent display with the intensity of the electroluminescent light controlled by a semiconductor whose conductance is spatially modulated by the field effect control of the carrier density. Image panels were fabricated with no imperfections, such as missing lines and blank spots, in the image. Panel resolution (determined by the closeness of electrode spacing) was increased to 100 lines per inch. Images were stored with mild degradation for periods of up to five days. Coatings for protection of the image from the deleterious effects of water vapor in the atmosphere were developed. While corona erasure was employed for the most part during the program, two techniques for non-corona erasure were investigated. One technique employed the surface properties of an adsorbed layer of alcohol to erase images. The other technique employed controlled charge application by means of a photoconductor. This technique could lead to important improvements on the operating repertoire of the panel such as both positive and negative writing as well as selective writing and erasing. (Author)
