Abstract : Since the Second World War, there has been a rapid development in the non-linear continuum mechanical theories of elasticity and viscoelasticity. The salient stages in the development of these theories are discussed. Various concepts which have been proposed are discussed critically both with respect to logical status and physical relevance. These include the principle of material frame-indifference, certain thermodynamic theories as they apply to continua, and the axiomatization of mechanics.
