Abstract : The report covers design, development, fabrication and test of a sputtered neutral atomic beam system consisting of beam source, mechanical velocity selector, ionizer and mass spectrometer. Prime accomplishments were improved performance and simplified designs when compared to previous developments and investigation of generated beams to ascertain constituent particles, densities and energy distributions. The report concludes that: (a) Test and calibration verified proper function of all subassemblies and successful integration of all components into one system to produce velocity selected neutral beams. (b) Experiments with copper revealed that sputtering can produce neutral beams of both simple atomic species and complex molecular structure, depending upon the nature of the target and its relation to other sputtering parameters. (c) Recorded mass spectra confirm the existence of sputtered neutral atomic nitrogen and oxygen. However, no direct density measurements were made. (d) The developed theoretical model, verified by independent experiment, demonstrates that the maximum possible neutral atomic nitrogen beam produced under the conditions imposed, had a density of 0.65 x 10 to the 15th power particles/sec.
