Abstract : The document presents the development of a statistical detection model to provide an accurate, quantitative description of threshold visual performance over a wide range of background luminance and target parameters. The work investigates relationships that exist between visual performance and reconnaissance. A statistical theory is developed in which neural excitation noise results from random fluctuations in both target and background luminance, and decision criterion is assumed to be programmed.
