Abstract : The major splanchnic hemodynamic response to cardiac glycoside is an increase in resistance to flow of blood in the viscera. The advocacy of cardiac glycoside, in the absence of heart failure, may not be without its risk. In shock states in the elderly, mesenteric perfusion is already low. Further vasoconstriction imposed by digitalis may be a burden which cannot then be sustained, and ischemic necrosis of the gut may be the result. (Author)
