Abstract : The Small Astronomy Satellite contains a PCM command system to provide housekeeping and experiment control. To exercise this system, ground hardware was developed that encodes a partitioned computer word, or a manually inserted sequence, into the standard NASA PCM command data system format. The format used for the SAS spacecraft is a 64 bit FSK-AM signal containing leading and trailing synchronization, satellite address, intersystem decoding information, and command. Design, system operation, construction and adjustment of the ground encoder are discussed using block diagrams, timing charts, waveforms, and photographs. (Author)
