Abstract : Certain complex fluid flows were analysed and explored by means of decomposition of the phenomena into simpler elements and synthesizing the results into workable models. The specific problem areas where this technique was employed with success are: (1) Formation and development of wakes behind a thin flat plate or airfoil; (2) interaction of flat plate laminar boundary layers with free-stream turbulence; (3) flow of heterogeneous fluid systems; (4) response of a fully turbulent flow to external influences. The status of each of these topics is discussed. In addition, several related outputs which have come about because of the findings in the direct explorations are mentioned. A chronological bibliography of papers, seminars, and reports which have been completed or are in preparation is listed. (Author)
