Abstract : Experimental data on various types of columns designed to support large multistory loads are presented. In the tests described, three series of test columns were prepared and subjected to destructive testing under axial loads. The three series were reinforced as shown. The size of the reinforcement bars used within each series was varied. Tabulated test results show exact configuration tested, ultimate actual load, and theoretical ultimate load. The tests indicate that the application of oblique reinforcement along the entire length of columns for multistory structures is satisfactory for the 560-ton loading and reduces the reinforcement material cost by as much as 30 percent. At loads of 600-1000 tons, the oblique reinforcement is particularly effective. Recommendations for changes in design standards are made. (Author)
