Abstract : The use of directional derivatives in the solution of classical optimization problems was introduced. Directional derivatives provided a technique to approximate a function in a neighborhood of a point along a particular direction. With this approximation a complete and original analysis procedure of constrained optimization problems was developed. The study of classical optimization problems using directional derivatives not only provided a better computational technique for the solution of the problem, but also represented a unification in the theory of optimization.
