Abstract : A general methodology for evaluating performance in a free-sorting task is outlined. Two statistics are offered: one is based upon empirically estimated sampling distributions and can be used for determining sorting behavior significantly deviant from chance for any number of subject-defined categories; the second statistic can be used to evaluate consistencies between subject and experimenter-defined categories, regardless of the number of categories used by the subject. The procedure presented, although discussed in terms of one specific task, provides a methodology which can be generalized to include any categorization experiment. (Author)
