Abstract : For studying the control of ventilation in man a technique was employed in which a continuous curve relates ventilation to alveolar O2 tension under isocapneic conditions. It was shown that in man decreasing alveolar oxygen tension under isocapneic conditions produces little change in ventilation until a critical oxygen tension range of 50-60 mmHg is reached. Thereafter further reduction in alveolar Po2 results in progressively larger increments in ventilation. A completely computerized on-line system was developed for mathematical analysis of this data.
