Abstract : A sample of plastic propellant RD2404/Lot 19 has been characterized in uniaxial tension using WLF time-temperature superposition principles, over a temperature range of -60 to +60 degrees C, and a strain-rate range of 0.1 to 10 to the minus 1. A glass transition temperature of -85 degrees C is indicated on this basis. The effective gauge-length for ERDE dumb-bells of this propellant is 56 mm, between +60 to -40 degrees C. At -60 degrees C it is more than doubled. Ratios of the propellant's extensibility at -30 and -40 degrees C enable the derivation of the degree of stiffening of the rocket motor case required if it is to function at the lower temperature with a safety factor similar to that at the higher.
