Abstract : A literature search for studies of surface adsorption, stereo-chemistry, and synthesis chemistry was conducted to determine molecular structural designs and synthesis reaction series for oil soluble, polymeric, multiple-adsorption-group corrosion inhibitors. The most promising compounds of this type were considered to be linear beta-alkyl substituted polystyrenes and ethylene or propylene beta-alkyl substituted polystyrene copolymers with para substituted polar adsorption groups. A trial reaction series involving the synthesis of barium, calcium, and potassium poly (beta-hexadecyl-p-styrene sulfonate) salts was completed. In the trial synthesis, the final product was a mixture of the saturated monomer and dimer of beta-hexadecyl styrene having three sulfonate groups. The position of the sulfonate groups was not determined. It was concluded that the synthesis reaction series was sound, but that minor alterations would have to be made in the polymerization and sulfonation reaction steps before subsequent synthesis could be successful in yielding high molecular weight, linear polymer chains with sulfonation in the para position.
